Murder in the Medea

Murder in the Medea
Art Deco was known for is intricate decorations on buildings, typically made of a golden metal. They were usually very geometric in design.
Using inspiration from the earlier images, I created the idea of a frame around the title of the play that the poster was featuring.
The next set of inspiration images focused more on location. The art deco style has some beautiful posters of just simple blocky shapes with its dependence on lighting to show the audience depth.
The thumbnails focused more on the location the play would take place in, a hotel named The Medea. Multiple lighting options were considered in this set.
The appearance of woman in this style was most featured in magazines like Vogue. They are recognizable by their long necks, slender arms, and disproportionate faces.
This set of thumbnails focused on the main characters featured in the play. This idea plays around with dramatic lighting and the unusual poses often featured in Art Deco designs.
The final design (middle) was picked from the third set of thumbnails (left) focusing on one of the characters from the play. Colors and style were heavily influenced by the Vogue cover (right) with the dramatic contrast.
The poster features the play Murder in the Medea with a girl holding a knife. This is to inspire curiosity as to if the girl is the murderer or the victim and then in turn motivating them to see the play. The text and background details are of a golden color to represent the hotel the play takes place in while allowing the character in front to stand out.
